![]() National RSPCA Statistics
Mon 12 Jan 2009 During RSPCA Awareness Week celebrations we looked back at what we have achieved in the last financial year. In 2007-2008 the RSPCA provided shelter for more than 161,000 stray, injured and surrendered animals, an increase of 12.17% on the previous year. The RSPCA's latest national statistics should serve as a reminder to all pet owners that desexing is one of the best things you can do to help the RSPCA and stop the senseless euthanasia of thousands of animals every year. Statistics for 2007-2008 have revealed that RSPCA shelters and Inspectors are busier than ever. We're doing our absolute best to find new homes for the thousands of cats, dogs, livestock, birds and other animals that come through our shelters and increased national rehoming rates for the last financial year reflect that effort. Unfortunately, the number of cats that had to be euthanased has jumped by over 28%. One female cat and her young can generate over 420,000 cats in just seven years. So please desex your cat. This is something simple that you can do to help the RSPCA curb this growing problem. While the majority of animals received by the RSPCA are dogs and cats the RSPCA cares for all creatures great and small including horses, livestock, wildlife, birds and small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and mice. RSPCA Inspectors investigated more than 49,000 complaints of cruelty and neglect, a 15% increase on last year. This increase may be due to a greater awareness about the role of the RSPCA and its Inspectorate. RSPCA Animal Rescue has contributed to raising the profile of our hard working Inspectors. Dogs were the focus of the majority of cruelty investigations followed by horses, cats, livestock and birds.
